Bio: Jennifer Young

Jennifer Young is a business consultant who catalyzes and champions the small (but mighty) business.

After receiving my Master of International Management degree from the University of Denver in 1991, I worked with a consultant bringing French companies to the U.S. It was thrilling to work with varied industries and sets of challenges. This job confirmed that no two companies are the same, and the most crucial role of a consultant is to understand each owner's goals, strengths, weaknesses, and values and then create a plan for success. Since 1991, my career has encompassed building (sales), hiring, and managing people, finding operational efficiencies, changing organizational culture, digital marketing, fundraising, and accounting.

Why specialize in small businesses that serve homeowners?

Look at these realities below:

1) New York Enterprise Report survey found that small business owners work twice as much as regular employees. It also found that 33% of small business owners reported working more than 50 hours per week, and 25% said they worked more than 60 hours per week.

2) Forbes reports the average salary of a small business owner is just 3% above the annual mean wage in the U.S. The average small business owner salary is just 3% above the national average mean wage of $58,260[5] at $60,151.

3) Being a business owner's number one challenge, coming in at 52% is living with the uncertainty of owning your own business. After this concern, owners noted always being on the job, trying to avoid burnout, and balancing work and family. (From the 2016 Annual Bank of the West Small Business Growth Survey.)
